The Logic in Our Words
Language is something pretty fascinating. We tend to think of it as a tool to communicate with each other and for other purposes like describing the world around us. It is impeded into our being in a way that makes it hard to imagine that there was a time when people did not have the luxury of thinking and speaking. Or, they maybe have been able to think somehow without words, but it is probably incomprehensible for most of us to try to imagine it. Can any of us think without words at all? Thinking is technically a voice in your head that speaks to you. I mean you hear it speaking but it is not a person; it is you. Or so I think. Can anyone think without words? It is a genuine question I have. However, this is not what this piece is about; it is about three words only. We go on tossing these three words left and right as if we know their meaning but the truth is that we simply do not. So, let us start with the first and most puzzling one; the word "perfect". I suppose we all agree that everything in life is as far away from perfect as it can be. There is no way to describe how imperfect we are and yet we somehow came up with this word. It is mysterious how could we invent a word for something we do not understand and we definitely cannot reach. Perfect. It is like when life has absolutely nothing that can bother us. Nothing. Just, nothing. Not even a stupid fly that would keep on buzzing our ears us for hours. A life with no problems at all. Everything we want comes to us and all we should do is wish for it. A perfect text is a flawless one. One that can never be criticised because there is truly nothing flawed in it. A perfect moment is the beautiful moment that can never end. A perfect life is when you have just everything you need and want but, more importantly, it is a life where you cannot get bored. A life where you do not have to make any effort whatsoever. You can see how hard it is to describe or imagine such a perfect thing or a perfect life. It even sounds childish when putting it in words. So why do we have such a word? Maybe because we gave it another meaning. Maybe "good enough" is our perfect. But again, it does not make sense to have a word that means something and then change its meaning and keep on using it in the same context. Anyway, let us move to the next word. "Unthinkable". We may say something like this: "I am afraid the unthinkable would happen". I mean come on, how?! If I understand this word correctly, it means that something so tragic or unexpected that we cannot wrap our minds around it making it unthinkable. But just by realising how tragic an event is, makes it a thinkable event because that person who is mouthing such a statement actually have thought about the possible consequences of this course of events. Have we done it again? Have we changed the meaning of the word?!! Probably. It might be that we use to refer to something so unwanted. Something we are really afraid of, in a way that makes it painful to think about what results could follow such an event. Finally, is perhaps the most famous example of such words. It is "infinity". This is the most absurd one. We actually came up with a word that describes something like infinity when our minds are completely incapable of grasping the true sense of the word. It even defies the mathematical logic and not only the linguistic logic. For instance, infinity minus infinity is infinity because some infinities are bigger than others. You see how the mathematical logic is thrown into a trash bin there. It is as if we are saying some fives are bigger than other fives, or something like the infamous George Orwell; "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others". His statement I could never make sense of and I think it was the point; there is no logic. And nothing in our materialistic existence is infinite. Even the most infinite thing we know, our universe, will die off eventually. Everything is finite and imperfect and everything that crosses a human's mind is necessarily a thinkable thing or else it would not have crossed someone's mind.
